The Story Behind the Artwork

On 19 September 1944, during the fierce fighting west of Arnhem, Captain Queripel led a small rearguard force defending a vital route. Despite being wounded, he refused to withdraw. Instead, he ordered his men to safety and remained alone, armed only with a pistol and grenades, to hold off advancing enemy troops.

His actions ensured the survival of his men and exemplified the highest standards of leadership and self-sacrifice.

This painting vividly captures that final stand—chaos, courage, and unwavering resolve in the face of overwhelming odds.
