‘Remembering The Eleventh’

During WW2 and for Operation Market Garden – ‘The Battle of Arnhem’, the 10th Parachute Battalion together with the 11th and 156 Battalions, formed the 4th Parachute Brigade.

All three battalions were billeted close to one another in Leicestershire. The 10th in and around the villages of Somerby, Burrough on the Hill and Thorpe Satchville. The 156 and 11th Battalions were ultimately stationed in Melton Mowbray.

Although during their training and the run up to Arnhem there were fierce and sometimes violent rivalries, ultimately they fought and sometimes died together in the killing fields of the battle, they were sister battalions – Brothers in Arms.

Next of kin and supporters of the 11th Battalion have recently formed an association and aim to erect a memorial to the unit in Melton Mowbray. If you wish to know more and maybe wish to support them, this is the link to their website –
