‘ENGLAND TO ENGLAND via Holland, Germany & Belgium’ – The Arnhem War Diaries of Major Frank Lindley, 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment

A personal and detailed diarised account by Major Frank Lindley, Officer Commanding, Support Company, 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, drafted during captivity after the battle of Arnhem in his direct ‘no-nonsense’ hand,

His daily diary entries give the reader a ‘blow-by-blow’ insight into the specific actions of the Battalion during the battle. Sometimes humorous, occasionally terse, he gives hints at the characters of many men and fellow officers who fought alongside him.

It is a captivating story detailing the departure from Somerby through to the Battalion’s opposed drop on Ginkel Heide, the fighting in the Oosterbeek Perimeter and his subsequent wounding. Culminating in his capture and six months spent as a prisoner of war.

Frank Lindley was no ordinary officer. He was born in Doncaster from working-class stock and raised by his widowed mother following the death of his father in the early days of the Great War. Frank joined the Scots Guards as an enlisted man in 1933, and his promotion was rapid, rising to Warrant Officer within six years. He was commissioned in theatre during the Middle East campaign and later volunteered to join the 10th Battalion at Ramat David as the Mortar Platoon Officer. By the time of departure on Operation Market Garden, he had risen to the rank of Major and commanded the Tenth’s Support Company during the battle.

The biographical content adds context and depth to Frank’s life, highlighting his military career both pre and post-WW2, ending with his later service in West Africa and BAOR until his retirement from the Army in 1958, having completed 25 years of service.

Written, compiled and edited by Jade Lindley [Frank’s granddaughter] and Grahame Warner [Friends of The Tenth], the book is exclusively based on Frank’s original wartime family archive bequeathed and entrusted to Jade from her grandfather.

This is a ‘must-read’ book for all those interested in a detailed day-by-day, first-hand account of those tumultuous days of September 1944.

A4 sized format, 84 full-colour pages, with over 50 photographs and maps.
